Berkeley: Library discard process criticized

from the Contra Costa Times

“Library Director Jeff Scott, at his post since November, has stepped up the process known as ‘weeding,’ discarding old, outdated or infrequently used books. But library staff say the tomes Scott is sending to recyclers are actually treasures. At issue is the question of who decides what’s of value. Historically, 34 staff members shared decision-making over which books to buy and which to remove. Now five people make the determination.”
